Steampunk Travelogue: Caledon Oxbridge University

Captain's Journal: Caledon Oxbridge University
As I begin my cartographical voyages through the Steamlands, I was approached by a mutual associate regarding an individual who was seeking passage aboard an airship for a personal endeavor.  I agreed to meet with this Dr. Fabre, who through correspondence seemed well spoken but particular fellow.  However, as we did not have an onboard physician (and could always use the additional monies for the voyage), I agreed to meet him in person.  The first step of this voyage lead me to the renowned Caledon Oxbridge University, where we are to finalize the details regarding his passage.  He was not clear as to where we were to meet, which meant I had to do a bit of wandering through the Oxbridge campus to find him.

Landing point location at Caledon Oxbridge University

Caledon Oxbridge University is the initial arrival point for many when they arrive in the Steamlands.  There are numerous locales for new persons to learn the basics of Second Life, but probably none are as expansive or as welcoming as the University.

The Caledon Oxbridge Lecture Hall

New individuals to Second Life often land in locations which are frankly befuddling.  From advertising for a wide variety of activities to trying to simply learn to navigate the (initial) complexities of SL, many can feel frustrated and perhaps (sadly) decide Second Life is not something they wish to continue to be part.  Oxbridge University, is an excellent reprieve from this experience.  Starting upon arrival, a new person/avatar is provide step-by-step instructions on how to familiarize themselves with the Second Life experience... simply by following a series of arrows (noted in an earlier picture) to direct them on how to easily acclimatize to this virtual world.

By following the series of arrows, an avatar is guided through a number of buildings which shows them how to become familiar and proficient with a number of basic avatar concepts (e.g. avatar customization, camera controls, communication, etc.), as well as providing further details regarding SL (e.g., SL money and commerce, land management and use, ect.).

The Freebies Shop at the University

One additional location worth a visit (if your avatar is new) is The Freebies Shop, located on the northern end of the sim.  It has a wide variety of free items, including scripts, textures, avatars, clothes, accessories, and more.  If you are new (or just looking to add to inventory), The Freebies Shop is worth a visit.

Cafe Vox, a nice location for a respite after visiting the adjacent Freebie Shop

One item of note is that Caledon is a dedicated Victorian era location.  As such, it differs from other locations in SL as being a bit more civilized and proper - in the sense that poor conduct is monitored and discouraged.  Caledon as a whole is an excellent break from the common environment in Second Life.

If you are new to Second Life, and/or to virtual Steampunk, I highly recommend a visit to Caledon Oxbridge University.  For experienced avatars, there are many continuing courses to improve your SL knowledge base, which are prominently listed on the Caledon Oxbridge Class Schedule.  Additionally, Oxbridge Scholars are frequently in-world and more than happy to help or just answer basic questions.  Upon my arrival to the University, a Mr. Elfbider Skysmith greeted me and offered to answer any inquires I might have.  He had to depart for personal business, but a Ms. AngelaBlack23 happened to arrive and offered to help as well.  Honestly, the friendliness and camaraderie of Caledon shines though upon arrival to the Independent State.  I highly recommend a visit to the University!

Apparently punctuality is not one of Dr. Fabre's strengths, so I decided to take a brief break and enjoy a Cala Mondrago Robusto Oscuro... and enjoy the view of the University campus.  Looking forward to meeting this fellow and finding out what he is about...
